25 years ago I took an acne drug called roaccutane - which is basically just a mega-dose of Vitamin A - for 6 months, and YES it cured my acne, but it came at cost.
Something that started happening from day 1 was that whenever I would stand up, my entire vision would go black for 1-2 seconds. I would feel dizzy, and then my vision would become clear again.
To this day, 25 years later - this still happens to me.
It started on day 1 of this medication when I was 15, and now at 40 I still have this issue of when I stand up, my vision goes black for 1-2 seconds before becoming clear. God only knows what the health implications of this are.
I also had huge amounts of anxiety when I came off roaccutane, and my acne came back worse after I came off it. It is a drug that merely masks the symptoms while you are on it, only to be left with other, worse health conditions after you come off it.
I am in a chat group with other people who have used roaccutane, and many believe it has worsened their health for decades after coming off. The most common long-term side effects being infertility, loss of libido, and anxiety/depression.
My issue is that you do not hear about these potential negative side effects when you go to the GP.
I had no idea that 25 years later I would still be suffering with side effects of this medication. I thought it would cure my acne, end of. Of course, a 15 year old does not have any concept of any of this. A 15 year old just wants their acne gone.
Roaccutane is still a popularly prescribed drug for acne internationally - I wonder how many more people around the world are going to have long term side effects from roaccutane?
